Tips for Door-Knocking in the Summer
A summer door-knocking blitz can be very productive, but the heat changes both your strategy and homeowners' receptiveness. Here are some practical tips:
Before You Go
1. Start Early or Go Later
Avoid the hottest part of the day (typically 1 PMβ5 PM).
Best times:
9:00 AM β 12:00 PM
5:30 PM β 8:30 PM
You'll find more people outside, walking dogs, gardening, and enjoying the cooler temperatures.
2. Dress Professionally but Light
Light-colored clothing
Comfortable walking shoes
Hat or sunglasses (Remember to take off the sunglasses when knocking on the door.)
Breathable fabrics
You want to look approachable, not like you're suffering from heat exhaustion.
3. Bring Plenty of Water
Plan on drinking before you're thirsty.
Carry a water bottle
Keep extra water in the car
Consider electrolyte packets for long shifts
4. Use Sunscreen
Apply before you start and reapply if you're out for several hours.
5. Be Safe
Don't pet the dogs.
Don't open a gate.
